This follows on from the 'don't save Happisburgh' thread, but I don't like seeing that on the screen!
Although 'student' has voiced an unpopular opinion (to which they are perfectly entitled,if perhaps, in *my* opinion rather misguided), I would like to confirm that, no, students no longer get grants - just loans that they have to pay back when they start employment. I was the last of the students to get grants- the £2265 per year grant was frozen in 1991 and subsequent increases to income were in loan form. forum members might be suprised to learn that although I graduated in 1994 **I am still paying my loan back**. with 100% loans and tution fees, the biggest decision that has to be made now is not what university to go to or what course to study, but 'can I afford it?'. Even with the grant and financial help from my parents, It was still a struggle financially (I had to think twice about buying a 24p Mars Bar! nobody believes that, but it's true). I consider myself one of the lucky ones.
Regardless of opinions, I sympathise with anyone going through higher education at this time. |
