The Sherlock Holmes Society of London outside the Hill House

23 June 1984

Conan Doyle stayed at Happisburgh and wrote to his mother from the Hill House Hotel in 1903 about his ideas for a new story, “The Dancing Men”. Doyle drove the first motor car seen in Happisburgh. Gilbert John Cubitt, born at Happisburgh 1891, was the small boy who signed his name in an alphabetical code of dancing figures, and gave Conan Doyle the idea for his tale.
